Description
The National HHT Centre opened in January 2003 at Mercy University Hospital (MUH). The centre's mission is to identify individuals and families with Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT is also known as Oslter-Weber-Renu syndrome), to offer them optimal management of their specific manifestations of the condition, and to screen them for occult manifestations, with a view to treating potentially-dangerous manifestations prophylactically (e.g. occluding dangerous vascular malformations in the lungs or brain by interventional radiologic or surgical treatment), before they cause serious ill-health or death.
The centre is led by Dr. Adrian Brady (Consultant Radiologist) and Dr. Terry O'Connor (Consultant Respiratory Physician) who liaise with other specialists as needed in MUH and in other institutions nationwide and outside Ireland.
Team
Dr. Adrian Brady is a Consultant Radiologist who has a particular interest in interventional radiology, with application to the management of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs). Having trained in embolization of these common manifestations of HHT with Prof. Bob White (Yale University, U.S.), he has offered an embolization service to affected Irish patients since 2002.
Dr. Terry O'Connor is a Consultant Respiratory Physician, with a particular interest in the management of patients with HHT. Dr. O'Connor is the primary clinical point of contact for all affected patients and families seen in the Centre.
Ms. Margaret Murphy, patient coordinator for the Centre, is a cardiac technician by training and profession. She leads and maintains contact between the centre and our patients and associated families, and is usually the first point of contact for individuals making use of the centre's services.
